A German doctor went on trial Monday accused of killing 15 patients with lethal injections and acting as “master of life and death” over those in his care.
The 40-year-old palliative care specialist, named by German media as Johannes M., is alleged to have killed 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024 while working in Berlin.
The doctor is accused of injecting the victims, aged between 25 and 94, with deadly cocktails of sedatives and in some cases setting fire to their homes in a bid to cover up his crimes.
The accused had “visited his patients under the pretext of providing medical care”, prosecutor Philipp Meyhoefer said at the opening of the trial at the state court in Berlin.
Johannes M. had organised “home visits, already with the intention of killing” and exploited his patients’ trust in him as a doctor, Meyhoefer said.
“He acted with disregard for life… and behaved as the master of life and death.”
A co-worker first raised the alarm over Johannes M. last July after becoming suspicious that so many of his patients had died in fires, according to Die Zeit newspaper.
He was arrested in August, with prosecutors initially linking him to four deaths.
But subsequent investigations uncovered a host of other suspicious cases, and in April prosecutors charged Johannes M. with 15 counts of murder.
– Muscle relaxant –
A further 96 cases were still being investigated, a prosecution spokesman told AFP, including the death of Johannes M.’s mother-in-law.
She had been suffering from cancer and mysteriously died the same weekend that Johannes M. and his wife went to visit her in Poland in early 2024, according to media reports.
The suspect reportedly trained as a radiologist and a general practitioner before going on to specialise in palliative care.
According to Die Zeit, he submitted a doctoral thesis in 2013 looking into the motives behind a series of killings in Frankfurt, which opened with the words “Why do people kill?”
In the charges brought against Johannes M., prosecutors said the doctor had “administered an anaesthetic and a muscle relaxant to his patients… without their knowledge or consent”.
The relaxant “paralysed the respiratory muscles, leading to respiratory arrest and death within minutes”.
In five cases, Johannes M. allegedly set fire to the victims’ apartments after administering the injections.
On one occasion, he is accused of murdering two patients on the same day.
On the morning of July 8, 2024, he allegedly killed a 75-year-old man at his home in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg.
“A few hours later” he is said to have struck again, killing a 76-year-old woman in the neighbouring Neukoelln district.
Prosecutors say he started a fire in the woman’s apartment, but it went out.
“When he realised this, he allegedly informed a relative of the woman and claimed that he was standing in front of her flat and that nobody was answering the doorbell,” prosecutors said.
In another case, Johannes M. “falsely claimed to have already begun resuscitation efforts” on a 56-year-old victim, who was initially kept alive by rescuers but died three days later in hospital.
– ‘No motive beyond killing’ –
Prosecutors said he had “no motive beyond killing” and are seeking a life sentence.
The case recalls that of notorious German nurse Niels Hoegel, who was handed a life sentence in 2019 for murdering 85 patients.
Hoegel, believed to be modern Germany’s most prolific serial killer, murdered hospital patients with lethal injections between 2000 and 2005, before he was eventually caught in the act.
More recently, a 27-year-old nurse was given a life sentence in 2023 for murdering two patients by deliberately administering unprescribed drugs.
In March, another nurse went on trial in Aachen accused of injecting 26 patients with large doses of sedatives or painkillers, resulting in nine deaths.
Last week, German police revealed they are investigating another doctor suspected of killing several mainly elderly patients.
Investigators are “reviewing” deaths linked to the doctor from the town of Pinneberg in northern Germany, just outside Hamburg, police and prosecutors said.

Decolonization:
The relationship between the United States and its territories is a complex one. The United States has a total of five permanently inhabited territories. These territories are American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. Each has its own unique history and political fight. Their status as territories limits their ability to vote for the US president. Even though this is the case, the territories have delegates for the House of Representatives, known as a Resident Commissioner in Puerto Rico. Each territory also has elected governors who oversee the territory.
In recent years, efforts have been made to lessen the burden on the territories, mainly in relation to funding. An example of this is the Biden-Harris Administration working to reduce the economic load in four of the territories on February 8, 2023. Another recent show of work is the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law on November 15, 2021. The act includes providing climate and infrastructure resources to the US territories, involving ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. Even though there is some relief given to a lot of territories, each has its own unique connection to the US.
Some territories have chosen not to fight for statehood or full independence. American Samoa is a prime example of this. The islands have been allowed to keep control of their internal affairs. Their traditions remain strong, and their cultures are lively, but the US provides economic relief. American Samoa mostly relies on federal funding, tuna canning, and local industries to support itself. Another factor to consider is that the people of these islands are not US citizens.
On the contrary, the residents of the US Virgin Islands are American citizens, but they are not in a rush for independence. In 1993, there was a vote on its status, and most citizens were against independence, the number in favor being less than 5%. Since then, there has not been another vote. There are a few reasons for this, one of the biggest being the economic state. Being a US territory allows popular tourism from US citizens without a passport. Not only this, but major investments in the logistics of tourism, such as hotels, come from American sources. The islands also take comfort in knowing they are protected by the US.
The US Virgin Islands are not the only territory with US citizenship that is not currently fighting for independence. In the 1970s, the Northern Mariana Islands chose not to seek separation from the US. Rather, the islands took the path of forging closer links to the US.
In contrast to this, Puerto Rico has been actively fighting the battle for statehood. Puerto Ricans are US citizens by birth; however, they cannot vote in presidential elections. During a 2024 vote on the islands, 57 percent of residents voted in favor of statehood. According to Jorge Duany, former Florida International University professor and author of “Puerto Rico: What Everyone Needs to Know,” the vote was more about meaning than anything else.
Duany explained how only Congress can initiate a process of status change for Puerto Rico since 1898, because Puerto Rico became part of the United States as a result of the Spanish-American War. Congress has never taken action with regard to the status of Puerto Rico.
“I support a path forward for Puerto Rico as laid out in the Puerto Rico Status Act,” stated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar. “Puerto Ricans should be able to chart their own path to statehood.”
The vote was meant to be more than literal. It was a call for change, as the islands were ready for new chances. As of now, Puerto Rico cannot address its own status issues. This is because issues relating to the territories’ governance must go through Congress before any action.
Similar to this, Guam is working toward decolonization. The Commission on Decolonization was created in 1997, and it works to educate people on the political options in Guam. Choosing between statehood, independence, and free association is something they believe Guam’s citizens should be ready for in “preparation for an eventual political status plebiscite vote.” As US citizens, there is a wish to choose their status. With this, they also work to resolve Guam’s unincorporated territory status.
Each territory has its own relationship with the US, and not every single one has the same goals. The islands have their own respective journeys for independence, statehood, growth, and more. Providing a brief insight into these territories shows their unique challenges.

The Ear says that since the US dosen’t care what happens to any Arab in Syria, Israel must act to protect the Druze population since they were the first to get on board with putting a christen family on the throne of Syria, and now they are being punished for it.
The US told Israel to stop the attacks on Syrian soil yesterday. But the Ear told Netanyahu to intensify Israel’s attacks on government forces in Suwayda if they do not withdraw from the area. It looks like Netanyahu fears the Ear more than he does trump.

Why is the Ear supporting the Druze? They are an offshoot of Islam which permits on converts – either to or from the religion – and no intermarriage. Could it be because the Druze community in Syria is concentrated around three main provinces close to the Israeli -occupied Golan Heights in the south of Syria?
The reason the Druze were among the first Islamic arabs to accept the idea of a Christian family on the throne of Syria is that more than 20,000 Druze live in the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel seized from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967, before formally annexing it in 1981. The Druze share the territory with around 25,000 Jewish settlers, spread across more than 30 settlements.
The Druze expected that Christian family to cede the Golan Heights to them and Israel permanently. President Ahmed al-Sharaa agreed to allow Israel to hold on to the Golan Heights, but refused to formally cede it to Israel and the Druze.
Sunni extremist loyal to al-Sharaa are attempting to drive out or exterminate all Christians and Druze in Syria. The Ear says Israel owes them protection.
A key issue straining relations between Syria’s new government and the Druze is their continued insistence that a Christian family on the throne of Syria is still the country’s best hope. They believe that al-Sharaa who has a jihadist history is not the best choice.

Fear of losing his position to a proposed Christian family, has gotten the recent Islamist-led rebel takeover of Damascus in December 2024 by Syria’s current leader, former jihadist Ahmed al-Sharaa, to make vows to protect Syria’s minorities. He means to show the US that the Christians in Syria will be protected. He did not include the Druze in that guarantee. This has pissed off the Ear. He told al-Shara, “fuck, what Trump says, if you fuck with the Druze, you will pay the price. I will have Israel bomb you into the Stone Age.”
At first, al-Sharaa believed that Trump was more powerful than the Ear and that Israel feared him more than they did the Ear. But now he is thinking otherwise.
The Ear has threatened to divide Syria into independent or autonomous sections. The Iraqis, Egyptians, Saudis, and most other Middle East countries don’t want to get on his bad side so there will be no help from them for al-Sharaa. Iran has felt the sting of the Ear when they fucked with him so they won’t be coming to his aid anytime soon.

The Druze are an Arabic-speaking ethno-religious minority in Syria, Lebanon, Israel and the occupied Golan Heights. The Druze faith is an offshoot of Shia Islam with its own unique identity and beliefs.

The Druze community in Israel is largely considered to be loyal to the Israeli state, owing to its members’ participation in military service. There are some 152,000 Druze people living in Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They are essentially still Islamic. So why is the Ear protecting them?
