In light, the farthest we can see comes from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wmap.gsfc.nasa.gov\/universe\/bb_tests_cmb.html\">cosmic microwave background<\/a>, a time&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Age_of_the_universe\">13.8 billion years ago<\/a>&nbsp;when the universe was opaque like thick fog. Some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/icecube.wisc.edu\/info\/neutrinos\">neutrinos<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ligo.caltech.edu\/page\/what-are-gw\">gravitational waves<\/a>&nbsp;that surround us come from even farther out, but humanity does not yet have the technology to detect them. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Observable_universe#\/media\/File:Observable_universe_logarithmic_illustration.png\">featured image<\/a>&nbsp;illustrates the observable universe on an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Logarithmic_scale\">increasingly compact scale<\/a>, with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/planets\/earth\/overview\/\">Earth<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/sun\/overview\/\">Sun<\/a>&nbsp;at the center surrounded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/our-solar-system\/in-depth\/\">our Solar System<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasoftheuniverse.com\/12lys.html\">nearby stars<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap110614.html\">nearby galaxies<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap180305.html\">distant galaxies<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap140512.html\">filaments of early matter<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap130325.html\">cosmic microwave background<\/a>. Cosmologists typically assume that our observable&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/astrophysics\/big-questions\/How-do-matter-energy-space-and-time-behave-under-the-extraordinarily-diverse-conditions-of-the-cosmos\">universe<\/a>&nbsp;is just the nearby part of a greater entity known as &#8220;the universe&#8221; where the same physics applies.
