Originally called&nbsp;<em>Freedom<\/em>&nbsp;in the 1980s by U.S. Pres.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Ronald-Reagan\">Ronald Reagan<\/a>, who authorized the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/NASA\">National Aeronautics and Space Administration<\/a>&nbsp;(NASA) to build it within 10 years, it was redesigned in the 1990s to reduce costs and expand international involvement, at which time it was renamed. In 1993 the United States and Russia agreed to merge their separate space station plans into a single facility,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/integrating\">integrating<\/a>&nbsp;their respective modules and incorporating contributions from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/European-Space-Agency\">European Space Agency<\/a>&nbsp;(ESA) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Japan\">Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"embedly-card\" data-card-controls=\"1\" data-card-align=\"center\" data-card-theme=\"light\"><h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2cJtAFr0K7M&#038;t=151s\">Space Station Freedom<\/a><\/h4><p>This video presents great model photography along with astronaut activity as practiced in mockup.<\/p><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/platform.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color\">Did you know?
