{"id":464,"date":"2018-12-04T09:55:28","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T17:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.orderlyrandomness.com\/blog\/?p=464"},"modified":"2019-04-04T09:24:49","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T16:24:49","slug":"rocket-men-more-space-junk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.orderlyrandomness.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/04\/rocket-men-more-space-junk\/","title":{"rendered":"rocket men: more space junk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not a fan of this idea:<\/p>\n<p>SF-based company Elysium Space launched the remains of more than 100 deceased humans into space yesterday via the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.\u00a0 The ashy remains were packed into a 4-inch square satellite called a cubesat.\u00a0 For the approximate $2500 charge, loved ones can track the cube via satellite for about four years, before the cubesat falls back to earth.<\/p>\n<p>In 1998, a small vial of astronomer Eugene Shoemaker\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/TECH\/space\/9907\/31\/lunar.prospector.crash.04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ashes crashed into the moon<\/a>\u00a0as part of NASA\u2019s Lunar Prospector mission and remains on the surface.<\/p>\n<p>And the ashes of \u201cStar Trek\u201d actor James Doohan, who played \u201cScotty\u201d on the show, were sent to space among 320 sets of ashes on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/05\/24\/showbiz\/spacex-scottys-ashes\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a mission similar to Elysium\u2019s in 2012<\/a>.
