SF-based company Elysium Space launched the remains of more than 100 deceased humans into space yesterday via the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.\u00a0 The ashy remains were packed into a 4-inch square satellite called a cubesat.\u00a0 For the approximate $2500 charge, loved ones can track the cube via satellite for about four years, before the cubesat falls back to earth.<\/p>\n
In 1998, a small vial of astronomer Eugene Shoemaker\u2019s ashes crashed into the moon<\/a>\u00a0as part of NASA\u2019s Lunar Prospector mission and remains on the surface.<\/p>\n And the ashes of \u201cStar Trek\u201d actor James Doohan, who played \u201cScotty\u201d on the show, were sent to space among 320 sets of ashes on\u00a0a mission similar to Elysium\u2019s in 2012<\/a>. Mercury 7 astronaut Gordon Cooper\u2019s ashes were on board that flight as well.<\/p>\n And more junk just keeps going.\u00a0 This week, SpaceX launched 64 satellites in one go <\/a>.<\/p>\n Humans have already badly polluted their own planet.\u00a0 There’s a plethora of space junk and satellites orbiting around, approximately 30,000 pieces.\u00a0 \u00a0Do we really need to encourage more crap joining the junk pile?\u00a0 We can’t even clean up the mess we’ve dumped into our oceans.\u00a0 Who is going to clean up the junk floating in space?<\/p>\n
