The Justice Department reached an expansive settlement agreement that officially barred the IRS from further probing Trump, his family members, or his businesses for past tax issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5885763-irs-trump-tax-returns-settlement-agreement\/\">The Hill<\/a>) \u2013 The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is \u201cforever barred\u201d from examining President Trump\u2019s old tax returns, according to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1441216\/dl\">addendum<\/a>&nbsp;to the Justice Department\u2019s settlement of President Trump\u2019s lawsuit against the IRS, which was made public Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the single-page document says the tax agency will not be allowed to probe any of Trump\u2019s&nbsp;\u200b\u201dtax returns filed before the effective date\u201d of Monday\u2019s settlement agreement for any \u201cpresently known or unknown\u201d claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The settlement expansion&nbsp;prevents the IRS from prosecuting the president and&nbsp;shields other parties affiliated with Trump, including family, trust funds, parent, sister or related companies and subsidiaries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, Trump announced a decision to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5882920-donald-trump-withdraws-irs-lawsuit\/\">drop a $10 billion lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;against the agency for leaking his tax returns. In exchange, the Justice Department created a $1.776 billion \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5883454-doj-launches-anti-weaponization-fund\/\">Anti-Weaponization Fund<\/a>\u201d to provide an avenue for individuals who allege they\u2019ve been unfairly treated by previous administrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and his oldest sons, who were also plaintiffs in the IRS suit, will not receive a payout from the fund but will be given a formal apology, per the DOJ release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fund is set to be managed by a commission of five members appointed by the attorney general; one member will be chosen in consultation with congressional leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yes, the addendum to Donald Trump\u2019s tax settlement is directly tied to the tax return disclosures that New York Attorney General Letitia James used in her legal cases against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connection involves the origin of those tax documents and what the settlement resolves:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Leaks:<\/strong>\u00a0The controversy stems from the actions of former IRS contractor Charles &#8220;Chaz&#8221; Littlejohn. He stole and leaked years of Trump\u2019s confidential tax returns to news outlets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The AG&#8217;s Investigation:<\/strong>\u00a0Attorney General Letitia James used that publicly disclosed tax and financial information as part of her office&#8217;s investigation into the Trump Organization for business fraud and tax evasion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Settlement:<\/strong>\u00a0Trump filed a massive lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department, arguing that their failure to safeguard his private data allowed the leaks to happen.
