The female appendage you never knew exist. Its a very small horseshoe-shaped network of tubules attached directly to the ovary. And its all over the news this week because …. men. I kid you not.
It was first described in humans in 1870. There were detailed drawings of it in Gray’s Anatomy. But doctors didn’t understand it and could not find an immediate purpose for it in females, so they deemed it functionless and completely phased it out of modern anatomy textbooks. [1]
The male equivalent—the rete testis, which helps transport sperm inside the testicles—has remained standard knowledge in medical curriculum for over a century.
In 2025, a study was published in eLife where biologists studying the organ found that rather than being useless, the rete ovarii actively secretes protein-packed fluids, responds to hormonal changes, and communicates directly with the ovaries, but the study remained confined to academic and scientific circles until Hear Her Stories let the world know in a slide “Men deleted an organ from medical textbooks because they decided it was useless.“
This is very typical for the US. Women are second class citizens. Earlier this year the US was the only NO vote on a UN resolution for women’s rights.
