Before we end 2024, let me share with you one of my favorite things about the season! The lighted boat parade! Sausalito and San Rafael both had good ones, but nothing beats Florida, the land of boats. I would have watched Dunedin’s except our Marina was trashed during hurricanes Helene and Milton this summer and is currently shut down. But, enjoy this colorful little clip from Tampa’s parade. For those of you who think your English is perfect let us remind you that it is not. This office will conduct several advisory lessons through out this year. Be advised that it would behoove you to learn something from the presentations. Various groups have been selected to assist.
“Lay” is a transitive verb, and “transitive” refers to objects that are being acted upon. So, if you’re in the act of putting down a book before going to sleep, you’d say, “I lay the book on the nightstand,” because you’re performing an action on the book. In the past tense, you would say, “I laid the book on the nightstand.”
Intransitive verbs such as “lie” refer to things acting of their own volition — such as humans. (Here’s a quick memory tip: Only a person can lie on a bed and tell a lie.) An appropriate use here would be, “I lie on the grass in my yard.” But this is where things get even more confusing — the past tense of “lie” is “lay.” So, if you were sitting in the grass hours ago, you’d say, “I lay in my yard.”
As for that nap conundrum? It’s “I’m going to lie down,” but “I lay down for a nap earlier.”
Lollygag
To fool around, dawdle, or procrastinate
“Lollygag” was first documented as “lallygag” in 1862. The exact origins are unknown, but it likely came from merging the colloquial “lolly,”meaning “tongue,” and “gag,” or “trick.” Perhaps it was originally a tongue-twister, but now “lollygag” is a verb meaning “to dawdle or procrastinate.”
Here’s a word that should be used more often when referring to men.
Troglodyte
A person who lived in a cave
In the prehistoric context, a troglodyte was someone who lived in a cave. The term can still be applied to a modern hermit, but they don’t have to reside in a cave. Additionally, you can probably imagine this being used as an insult in an ’80s comedy flick — “What a troglodyte!” In that usage, you’re calling someone deliberately ignorant or old-fashioned. It’s a fun word to say, but we’re of the opinion that if you can’t say anything nice, well, you know.
I don’t want to date any troglodytes — I need someone who will go to the theater and concerts every weekend.

Issues like inequality, injustice, gender violence, religious extremism, tribal conflicts, and the systematic exploitation of resources remain in the shadows, almost as if they belong to a different world entirely.
Among the most heart-wrenching stories are those of religious persecution, particularly against Christians. Disturbing reports reveal that during Christmas Eve alone, 25 individuals were killed in attacks across Mozambique and Congo, where their homes and churches were also destroyed. Groups like ISIS boldly declare their intentions to eliminate Christianity and other religions from Africa.
Shockingly, even the Vatican, historically active in sub-Saharan Africa, has remained largely silent on these tragedies. In Burkina Faso, where a significant portion of the population identifies as Christian, local church officials estimate around 3,000 people have been killed in the past decade, with two million displaced. This pressing issue calls for immediate attention; otherwise, the consequences may ripple closer to home.
