As if companies don’t already sell questionable products that make them profit, but make us sick and keep the medical industry afloat, researchers at Carbondale University in southern Illinois have came up with an idea that nobody asked for – a new frankenfood for your early death, oops, I mean pleasure. Trash to treat: Scientists are baking with plastic waste

Researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale have developed a process that uses engineered yeast to transform plastic pollution and agricultural waste into ingredients for edible, protein-rich cookies.
Quinn Welsch / August 24, 2026

(CN) — Would you eat a cookie made from the world’s plastic pollution?

Researchers from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale claim to have found a process by which plastic pollution and agricultural waste transform via yeast into edible, protein-rich foods and flavoring molecules.

The researchers presented this strange process Monday at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago.

The researchers say that this new development will help reduce plastic pollution around the world while also addressing food security challenges of the future.

“Global food demand is expected to rise 35–56% by the year 2050, and about 30% of the world population will be at risk of hunger in the future,” Southern Illinois University Professor Lahiru Jayakody said in a statement. “The way to address that, I believe, is by using microbes.”

One of the most common forms of plastic used for drinking bottles, polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, also contains molecules with lots of carbon that can be rebuilt into something similar to a protein through the use of microbes, the researchers say. The result is a simpler, more eco-friendly solution than using a chemical reaction in a lab.

We were trying to develop technologies for plastic upcycling to make more valuable products,” Jayakody said. “We thought, why not focus on making food? Because plastic is carbon and food is carbon. Microbes are very clever — so we are using their traits to solve the problems we created.”

The researchers note that microbes have long-been used as miniature factories that can make a variety of different types of molecules. Yeast, for example, can be used to create insulin. Similarly, scientists in this project programmed yeast to convert the plastic molecules into proteins, vitamins and flavorings.

“We’re using microbes to develop the cookie into a more attractive, consumer-friendly product,” says Sandhya Jayasekara, a graduate student at Southern Illinois University who programmed the yeast.

For this project, the researchers used PET, discarded corn stalks, leaves and other biomass and put it through a process known as oxidative hydrothermal dissolution, created by another Southern Illinois University professor, Ken Anderson, that uses water and oxygen at high temperature and pressure to break down tough material into small pieces, researchers say.

Those pieces are then fed to the yeasts, which are programmed to reform them into different food ingredients, like proteins, fats and acids. The researchers also added fiber, starch and sweetener and put everything into a 3D printer.

The result is µBites, or “microbites,” the researchers say.

Technically, they are safe to eat, but researchers are waiting for further approval before they can do a taste test. Participants in the study say that the cookies smell good and, if they were in a resource-limited situation, they would eat one.

Admittedly, there is some caution around cookies made from plastic, Jayakody said in a phone conversation with Courthouse News.

“You are eating micro- and nano-plastics everyday,” he said. “But of course with this, we are making it into a protein that you need.”

The study was part of a project led by NASA Deep Space Food Challenge. The challenge, which ended in 2024, aimed to develop food that could be eaten by astronauts during space exploration missions.

The researchers hope the µBites will be ready for consumption within a few years and could be used in resource-limited environments, such as in space or undersea.

One of the main benefits of the microbial transformation process is microbes’ flexibility — the process can be used on a large scale to feed the masses, or used in confined areas, like a spacecraft or submarine, Jayakody said.

In theory, other biomasses could also be used in the process, though that has not been tried yet, he said.

The United Nations estimates that the world population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050. The United Nations also estimates that the 11 million tons of plastic pollution that enters the ocean each year will triple in the next two decades.

For now, the cookies are only in their proof of concept stage, Jayakody said.

I find this a very nasty idea. I can’t believe its healthful. Please, if you can, learn how to grow your own food. Now more than ever, this skill cannot be overlooked.

Another disappointment! The Michelin Guide sold out to Sysco, the massive, mass-market industrial food distributor. The Michelin Guide used to reward specialty restaurants, with unique ingredients and farm to table cooking. Not any more.

Thank you for reading today's post. Have an InterStellar Day! ~PrP

Reports say US has only 41 days of crude oil left due to the orange clown’s policies. This is Project 2025 in action. Reserves have not been so low in more than 50 years. Those with gas cars are going to pay the price.

    • Let me know if this is okay to post on the avenue:

Hello, my name is Nicole. My friend Suzanne suggested that I share my experiences here and ask for your thoughts.

When I was an adolescent, I saw a small being run into my bedroom and disappear into my closet. Its appearance reminded me of Dobby from Harry Potter, although this happened many years before the Harry Potter books existed. I am now 50, but I have never forgotten how clearly I remember that moment.

More recently, I have had four unusual experiences while deeply relaxed in the steam room or sauna at my gym.

During the first experience, I was completely relaxed when I suddenly became startled by what appeared to be a tiny silver spaceship directly in front of the third-eye region of my aura.

The second time, I perceived a beautiful orb of light moving within that same region, although it appeared slightly to the right of my third eye.

During the third experience, I was again completely relaxed and not consciously thinking about anything when an image resembling a Skype call suddenly appeared in my mind’s eye. I saw the head of a praying mantis. Then a series of small, Skype-like boxes formed what looked like a staircase leading into the universe. I had a strong inner knowing that I was being invited into their realm, and I accepted the invitation.

I then experienced what appeared to be their environment inside a rounded spacecraft. The experience was brief but distinct.

Something else I find interesting is that several praying mantises have recently appeared in my physical, everyday surroundings. I have seen them on the window of my art studio looking inside, on my bedroom window at home, and on the fence beside the path I use to enter my backyard. Perhaps this is simply a coincidence, but their repeated presence feels notable in connection with these experiences.

Before these encounters, I had expressed that I was open to first contact only with beings who come from pure love and serve the highest good of all.

I would be interested in hearing whether anyone here has experienced something similar. Why might a being appear in a mantis-like form? Could these recent experiences be connected with the being I saw during adolescence, or with the praying mantises appearing around me now?

      • PrP says:

Absolutely OK to post. Hope you get the answers you’re looking for.

        • Larry says:

My question is: Why is she writing to you in the first place? Are you related or friends with Suzanne? If so how can I get in on the experience?

          • George says:

You mean if you can get in her drawers. Well, I’m first on that list. I’ve been posting here much longer than your sneaky ass.

So how about it PrP? When do we meet?

      • Lewis says:

The question might be. Were you being invited up for conversation or experimentation? If it were Experimentation, then the “invite” you thought that you experienced was mostly ego.

However, if they didn’t mind you knowing that contact was made, perhaps because a cursory examination of whatever their experiment did to you would required visitation at a later date, they left you with pleasant memories of the encounter. By “pleasant,” I don’t mean something nice that actually happened. It could have been an implant that would allow you to be amenable to that necessary encounter on that “later date.”

I, have experienced such an encounter which I learned about, accidentally, during a hypnotic trance I was placed in to recover information about a crime that I had witnessed.

        • Lois says:

Not every encounter is the result of examination. By now aliens are very familiar with our biology. It is us, humans who are the ones eager to open up the bodies of aliens.

My sister and I jointly experience an alien visit. I was very afraid of what we saw, but she was bold and allowed the fireflies to return over and over again. Her body looked as if she were on fire. I ran into the house and told my older brother that Katie was being attacked by fireflies. He laughed and got a jar to capture a few.

Long story short, they left when he came out. Katie to this day says she felt that they were attempting to communicate with her.

      • Kurt says:

Sometimes what is, is exactly what it is. But I wouldn’t bet on it in this case. -“Before these encounters, I had expressed that I was open to first contact only with beings who come from pure love and serve the highest good of all.”- Humans often have the ego that makes them think that they can dictate to aliens what they can do to them and Why.

What makes you think that a superior being cares what you want? Not saying there aren’t some that wouldn’t, but you figure the odds.

      • Elias says:

I have had similar experiences during my childhood. I hadn’t related it to an “alien” experience until now. When I was 11 a duck on my farm allowed a bunch of bees to ride from one side of a pool of water on my farm to the side I was on. Those bees changed into possums and wander off into the woods behind me.

About three years ago, a bee entered an open window of my apartment in downtown New Jersey and changed into a cat. It meowed so loud that my neighborhood came to the door and demanded that I return his wife’s cat. At least it wasn’t a possum, so I complied.

I told this story to my mother and both my siblings, they just laughed. But later my sister called me and said that she had seen a duck on our old farm give a ride across our pond to something that jumped off when it reached the banks on the opposite side of the bank she was on, and walked away as a different thing that was atop the duck’s back.

But she ended the conversation with the warning that if I told anyone, she would deny that she said it.

      • Dante says:

I had an experience with a crow when I was 13. It walked up to me and took a bite out of my sandwich. I shooed it away. It flew off and returned with two other crows, they proceeded to eat the potato chips on my plate. I was about to throw a fork at them when the one that I had shooed originally, said, “don’t do that if you want a friend.” I ran into the house and never told anyone about it.

I am now 57 and I have had great relationships with crows for the last 9 years. Don’t know if that crow is one of them, but I get regular visits. One told me that Elaine wasn’t my natural child, but that she would be the one to care for me most.

My wife died several years ago. During the time I cared for her in a hospice she revealed to me that Elaine was my Uncle’s child. She said that he had raped her when I was away on military duty.

He was dead when she told me or I would have killed him. I will never tell Elaine the truth. Helen and I agreed it was best she doesn’t know.

Elaine is my eldest and she holds our family business together. Under her tutelage the company expanded for a statewide business to an international one. She is my rock.

        • Nicole Hitchcock says:

Wow! I will never see crows in the same. Thank you for sharing. Elaine is fortunate to have such a loving and appreciative elder.

      • Wendell says:

There are no such thing as aliens. It is all a scam. What you experienced is just an insect run into. Next time step on the pests.

        • Ellen says:

We are all entitled to believe what we wish as long as it doesn’t infringe upon the life and happiness of others. So I choose to believe that my contact was with an alien being.

      • Luci says:

I have had an encounter of the third kind. It occurred when I was a law student at Columbia. This person was a fellow student in my second year. She and I became very close friends. One day she warned me about a guy I was dating. It turned out that what she had predicted about him was true. I cried in her arms and she revealed that she was an alien. I was shocked and at first I thought that she was just trying to distract me from my misery.

She said that she was a tiny being compared to my statue. I am 5’6”. She said that her species was about 2 and a quarter inch tall. She said that since humans judge things based on what they look like that she would chose something I would accept to prove to me that she was an alien. She turned herself into a blue eyed grayling butterfly. Flew into my kitchen and perched herself on the handle of my “The Law” coffee mug. 18 years later, I still have that mug. It always makes me feel warm inside.

Perhaps they have returned in human form. You never know.

Acetaminophen is an invaluable pain and fever reliever. Compared to other common pain meds like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it’s gentler on the stomach. It’s also considered the safest OTC painkiller that women can use while pregnant (contrary to recent fearmongering from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., taking it during pregnancy doesn’t seem to raise the risk of autism). But we’ve long known that acetaminophen has a risk of causing liver damage, especially when it’s taken in higher doses than recommended.

Those of you using this medication need to be careful not to damage your liver.

  4. Wb^/* says:

Those of you who have been fighting to keep us off the Board of Evacuation because you claim we are too emotional to make critical decisions need to acknowledge that during these evacuation trials we have not only excelled in all critical phases, but we have been instrumental in assisting you “logics” in coping with your failures to meet the minimum standards necessary to advance according to the fleets of both ˇ˙´ ´´®ø® and ӈߠ˝®åç´.

We understand Earthlings because we are from a planet, Wsibz, that is very similar to Earth topography. Like Earth, it takes our planet 366 days to orbit our sun and our days are 24 hours long. Granted Wsibz is roughly three times the size of the planet Earth, but we are only twice their size on average. The natural phenomenons on Wsibz are very close to those on Earth. Except for smaller lungs (due to less gravitational pull from the core of our planet), we are very similar to humans in appearance.

We mention the above to emphasize that we will not back down from demanding that emotionally endowed members of this alliance be accepted on an equal basis with you so called logically oriented beings.

    • PrismPrincess says:

I agree. I think the angle of emotional assistance you could provide is logical to include.

      • S[4 says:

I don’t usually post, but here I think it is necessary. Exactly what “emotional assistance” can they provide?

        • M]/b says:

PrP, I hope you don’t mind me answering this, but I have a recent story that I would like to share that perhaps this AB as well as others reading this might understand my reasoning for including emotional beings such as Wb^/* on the board of evacuation.

          S[4 et al:
I use AI quite often: ChatGPT and Claude. And I recently came to a really wonderful insight that I think would serve not only humans, but also AB’s that question the benefits of being an emotional being.

I recently had AI help me decide who to hire to design my new website. AI helped me write a brief and I received over 30 responses. It was a bit overwhelming, so AI helped me narrow down my decisions by giving me parameters of how I should decide by choosing which applicants heeded my instructions and followed protocol. If they did neither of those, they were not in the running. That alone was very helpful and logical, and eliminated my feelings of overwhelm, as well as many of the applicants.

After narrowing down my top contenders, I then uploaded their profiles to get feedback from AI.
AI did not choose one person that I felt should be in my top three. I mentioned this to AI and stated that I put an Asterisk next to his name, as I kept revisiting his profile. There was something about him. AI did not think, that although he was top-rated, his portfolio lacked a sophistication of what I was looking for, for my new website. Still, I felt that this designer should be considered. He was very receptive and started working on my website, giving me ideas, even before I hired him.

The other two in the running, who had examples in their portfolio that had that sophisticated look, were not only asking for 2-3 times more money than what I was offering in payment, when I contacted them, they didn’t respond in a timely manner, and when they did, and I had more questions, I never heard back.

So I ended up going with the designer that I had a good feeling about.
The operative word here is “feeling.” What I’ve learned over the past months as I’ve worked more with AI is that AI is obviously a computer that is very logical. It has the power to scan the Internet for anything one desires to know about anything, and gathers information in a logical and organized way that is all based on data. I’m not comparing logical ABs to a computer AI, but I do think that there are some similarities. And that isn’t a bad thing.

AI can understand feelings because it is scanning the Internet, looking for answers to emotional questions so that it can relate to an emotional being, and have the sensitivity that one may need when conversing on a sensitive subject. Which is wonderful. People using AI can feel heard, understood and can receive excellent advice. Something that some logical ABs may not be able to do. No judgement.

But what AI doesn’t have is “intuition” or what we call “gut feeling or instinct.” It was my gut “feeling” that told me to hire the web designer that I hired, even though AI recommended he not be in the running. And it was the best decision that I made to this day. He created a beautiful website, was extremely patient, knowledgeable, did more than our contract asked for, and always answered in a respectfully and timely manner. I could not have asked for a better website designer. The process was smooth and seamless. AI has been a part of this process since day one and has said repeatedly that I made the correct choice in hiring this person.

I learned something about myself. And perhaps you’ll learn something too. While logical beings are wonderful, emotional beings have a lot to give. We have instinct and intuition that has served me well down here on earth. And the more I listen to my intuition and instinct, the more things have worked out for me. I understand the benefits of being logical, and I believe I’m a very logical human. But I am also emotional, and my emotions serve me well I think having a combination of both is really the best recipe for success. However if I had abandoned my intuition and just listened to a logical being, or in this case AI, I could’ve made a possible big mistake.

It was logic that got me to narrow down to the top three. It was my intuition that made me choose the right person. They worked beautifully “together.”

I feel(there’s that word again 🙂 that having emotional beings up there would be very useful. If you don’t give them a chance, you will never know, and could be making some big mistakes that you may not be able to reverse.

Beings such as Wb^/* have already proven that they have not only ‘excelled in all critical phases, but have been instrumental in assisting the logical ABs in coping with their failures to meet the minimum standards necessary to advance.’

Using “logical” beings words, “The logic escapes me” why you wouldn’t include them, and create the perfect recipe for success.

          • L[7 says:

That argument was recently made by Dimitri. Have you been practicing this spill on him?

I ask, because he only today changed his vote to yes, and encouraged several others to do the same.

Humans have an expression, “Stay in your lane.” Perhaps you should “take a hint.”

            PrP:
Of course, this was not advice meant for you.

    • M]/b says:

PrP said it perfectly. And I concur.

      • PrismPrincess says:

Sometimes their logic can “throw the baby out with the bath water” ; other angles are always something to learn from I have found.

By intervening in the rules governing the 2026 election without even putting a justice’s name on the opinion, the Supreme Court has revealed itself once again as the judicial arm of the Republican State Committee. Enough of this bullshit. It’s time for Democrats to break glass and fight fire with fire if they capture control of Congress next year.

Yesterday, the Court’s conservative majority granted the Trump administration emergency relief that allowed part of the president’s executive order that restricted mail voting to proceed. As has happened over and over, a federal judge — naively believing that the United States is still a nation of laws — had previously concluded that Donald Trump lacked the authority to rewrite election rules that the Constitution entrusts to the states and to Congress.

The Supreme Court kicked the ultimate resolution of that question down the road because it no longer occupies itself with solving weighty constitutional matters. Instead, in what is increasingly its roundabout way to give Trump whatever he wants, the nation’s highest court issued yet another unsigned order removing one of the obstacles standing in Trump’s way. This time, just a little more than two months before the midterm elections, the Court has decided that Trump would be able to restrict mail voting in part.

Enough of this nonsense. Democrats should stop responding to this Court as though it were anything other than a subsidiary of the Trump administration. Instead, they should campaign on hitting these justices where it hurts — and then make good on their promise should they regain control of Congress in January. …

She has to take incumbent republican Ashley Moody Fla AG next to win. Vindman underestimated her. I don’t. She ran on a shoestring budget. Going into the primary she had less than 1 million and he had 16 million. Also I saw the video of what she’s describing below. In one month, I will stand trial, I face 2 yrs prison. My name is Angie Nixon. I am the Democratic nominee for Florida’s Senate race.

    This is my story.

Three months ago, I staged a sit in outside Ron DeSantis’ office.

I was protesting the Jim Crow gerrymander that Republicans shoved through the state house within hours of the Louisiana V. Calais ruling. A ruling that was plainly intended to stop Republicans from being thrown out of office during the midterms and eliminate Black representation.

They handcuffed me and charged me with resisting an officer and trespassing (see pic above). The maximum sentence if convicted is two years in prison.

If they think the threat of a trial is going to make me back down, they picked the wrong woman.

On Tues, I became the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Florida in a stunning political upset.

Republicans are going to every single thing they can to stop me from beating them in November — including throwing me in prison if they can.

I am texting you today to respectfully ask you to help me shove this blatant abuse of power back in their face.

Please, chip in any amount you can, even just $1, right now. Together we are going to retake the Florida Senate race and show Republicans that their abuses of power will not stand.

The rocket was roughly 39’ long, 13’ wide, and weighed about 8,800 pounds. It kicked up a lot of regolith. Shouldn’t we do something about the litter humans are making of the Moon? One of Politico’s anonymous staffers said people and organizations outside congress are a big part of the issue. They’re “going to Claude or ChatGPT to draft the legislative language itself,” the person said. They added that the OLC spends “more time trying to fix AI-drafted legislation than it would take for them to draft it from scratch.

Coming soon iPods with cameras. – a guy wearing AirPods picks up a book called Could Should Might Don’t. A voice says “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” The guy in the video’s mouth moves as he apparently asks what I’m going to assume is Siri to “save” the book for later.

When all 6 of us were in the vGloi room, you said “We an do this.”

Dimitri who was one of the 6 said; -Now, you said “We.” That makes me nervous. I assume that you mean you 5, because it would be illogical to include me in any kind of “we,” being I’m me, and I don’t know any of you as I’ve never met any of you outside of this room. Logically explain to me why I would want to be part of your “we”?
Yes, I am a master of the art of accruing compromising information. But, I am not for hire.

After he left the room, no one suggested a way to get him to work for us. I, too, was at a lost for one. But now I have a way. Let’s do this.

Why are you so set on leaving your MotherShip for this woman? Without her mystique, what you are left with is a sloppy slut with a huge bank account. Last we checked, you are not interested in her money. Come back before it is too late.

Why are we saving these fucking humans? Every time we find a solution for one from of their pollution of the planet, they come up with a new one. Speaking of which, the cattle has created an ideal environment for toxic heavy metal pollution in Antarctica. There are aliens that have been living there from longer than the human species has existed. Now their way of life is being threatened. Why don’t we just exterminate these polluters and take the planet for ourselves?

Yes, I know that she does not love me. She loves the thought that I love her. And I loved the thought that I actually believed that she loved me. Logic vs Emotion or Emotion/ Logic? I loved the fact that she thought that I was human and not some logic driven alien. I loved her and maybe I still do. But my logical side tells me it cannot work. Yet…

    • R[3 says:

Most of us primarily logic-based aliens who love humans have experienced what you are going through. Humans want us to be around more, to be more present. And when we are around they want us to be normal. But as primarily logic-based aliens that is difficult because being normal is a cover. For us normal doesn’t exist.

It is hard for us primarily logical-based beings to be in love. Humans think that we should be alone. They think that we don’t need anybody when in actual fact our logic makes us logical beings due to our ability to make the unreasonable seem reasonable. But, there is nothing reasonable about love. In the end, we, primarily logic-based beings ruin everything attempting a relationship with a human.

I want a Muslim man who won’t insist on those stupid restrictions on women. I love my religion, but not the bullshit control stuff men add to it.

        • Caroline says:

I’d like to try an alien. Human males don’t interest me anymore. I’m in a pretty good relationship with one right now. But as a human male, he can’t be all that he pretends to be. I’m a wealthy woman, he is too and from the right background. But I’m a billionaire, self-made. He is from old money and maybe inherited $3 to $400 million. He is extremely handsome and too sure of hisself.

He turns 50 in two weeks. He doesn’t think I notice, but I have caught him eyeing the young stuff. I reached my 40th last week and I’m more sensitive to the youth competition now.

I have never had an alien encounter. I was intrigued by Nicole Hitchcock’s post. I had my secretary look her up. It seems that she is a very talented person, and very credible. I wanted to ask her more about her experience. But I’m sometimes too pushy.

      • PrismPrincess says:

Love doesn’t need to be reasonable. And not every couple is compatible no matter how badly they want to bump uglies. Relationships only work when there is an understanding of what each party can deliver to the relationship, and what each party’s expectations are of the other. ABs could travel for a long time and be gone for decades; are you comfortable with that? HBs die early, its like losing a pet for ABs. They will miss their pet. The AB-HB relationship may not be reasonable, but it can work, especially if the parties (and especially HBs) can let go of having unsaid expectations of each other.
