Satyagraha is the doctrine of non-violent protest to achieve political and social progress. It is the legacy of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on this date in 1948. He was responsible for Indian gaining its independence from Great Britain. He was shot in the chest three times in the garden of Birla House by Indian Nationalist Nathuram Vinayak Godsem. Mr. Godsem had twice earlier attempted to assassinate Gandi.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, made the following statement to his country on the radio:
“Friends and comrades, the light has gone out of our lives, and there is darkness everywhere, and I do not quite know what to tell you or how to say it. Our beloved leader, Bapu as we called him, the father of the nation, is no more. Perhaps I am wrong to say that; nevertheless, we will not see him again, as we have seen him for these many years, we will not run to him for advice or seek solace from him, and that is a terrible blow, not only for me, but for millions and millions in this country.[201]

I find this date profoundly interesting.
Besides Mr. Gandhi being assassinated, the 36th President of the US, Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on this date in 1882.
Charles I, King of Great Britain and Ireland was executed in London on this day in 1649 for quarrelling with Parliament over his authoritarian rule that starting a civil war.
And
German President Paul von Hindenburg named Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany in 1933.
