221116 10:37 – Atahualpa

Atahualpa was the Incan Emperor in 1532. How he became emperor is interesting too, but I’ll save that for another day.

On this date in that year, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro’s actions would facilitate the demise of the Incan Empire, and the rise of European colonization. Here’s the story:

On November 16, 1532, Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish explorer and conquistador, springs a trap on the Incan emperor, Atahualpa. With fewer than 200 men against several thousand, Pizarro lures Atahualpa to a feast in the emperor’s honor and then opens fire on the unarmed Incans. Pizarro’s men massacre the Incans and capture Atahualpa, forcing him to convert to Christianity before eventually killing him.

By 1532, the Inca Empire was embroiled in a civil war that had decimated the population and divided the people’s loyalties. Atahualpa, the younger son of former Incan ruler Huayna Capac, had just deposed his half-brother Huascar and was in the midst of reuniting his kingdom when Pizarro arrived in 1531, with the endorsement of Spain’s King Charles V. On his way to the Incan capital, Pizarro learned of the war and began recruiting soldiers still loyal to Huascar.

Pizarro met Atahualpa just outside Cajamarca, a small Incan town tucked into a valley of the Andes. Sending his brother Hernan as an envoy, Pizarro invited Atahualpa back to Cajamarca for a feast in honor of Atahualpa’s ascendance to the throne. Though he had nearly 80,000 soldiers with him in the mountains, Atahualpa consented to attend the feast with only 5,000 unarmed men. He was met by Vicente de Valverde, a friar traveling with Pizarro. While Pizarro’s men lay in wait, Valverde urged Atahualpa to convert and accept Charles V as sovereign. Atahualpa angrily refused, prompting Valverde to give the signal for Pizarro to open fire. Trapped in tight quarters, the panicking Incan soldiers made easy prey for the Spanish. Pizarro’s men slaughtered the 5,000 Incans in just an hour. Pizarro himself suffered the only Spanish injury: a cut on his hand sustained as he saved Atahualpa from death.

Realizing Atahualpa was initially more valuable alive than dead, Pizarro kept the emperor in captivity while he made plans to take over his empire. In response, Atahualpa appealed to his captors’ greed, offering them a room full of gold and silver in exchange for his liberation. Pizarro consented, but after receiving the ransom, Pizarro brought Atahualpa up on charges of stirring up rebellion. By that time, Atahualpa had played his part in pacifying the Incans while Pizarro secured his power, and Pizarro considered him disposable. Atahualpa was to be burned at the stake—the Spanish believed this to be a fitting death for a heathen—but at the last moment, Valverde offered the emperor clemency if he would convert. Atahualpa submitted, only to be executed by strangulation. The day was August 29, 1533.

Fighting between the Spanish and the Incas would continue well after Atahualpa’s death as Spain consolidated its conquests. Pizarro’s bold victory at Cajamarca, however, effectively marked the end of the Inca Empire and the beginning of the European colonization of South America. Source

In particular, Ukraine doesen’t plan to storm Moscow and generally send troops to the internationally recognized territory of Russia, is not going to denuclearize Russia, and even more so to seek its collapse (although the latter is likely to happen some time after the war, like the collapse of the USSR happened after the Soviet-Afghan war). All these goals are meaningless, and, in principle, impossible to achieve.

The office of President Zelensky said that they agreed with the United States on what goals would be considered a victory in the Russian-Ukrainian war. These goals are:

    1. Complete de-occupation of all territories of Ukraine (including the part of Donbass controlled by the separatists in 2014-2022 and Crimea).

    2. Payment of reparations by Russia.

    3. International guarantees that will not allow the Russian Federation to attack again.

The latter, hopefully, will be implemented through Ukraine’s accession to NATO. If everything continues as it is now (the West will not sabotage support for Ukraine, Russia will continue to try to win with cannon fodder and will not dare to use nuclear weapons), then the achievement of these goals is almost inevitable. Ukraine will win, justice will win.

👋🏾 Megan here. I’ve already declared Senor Sisig burritos the best in the city, but the San Francisco Chronicle’s guide details other must-try spots sprinkled throughout the city.

What’s happening: Staples like La Taqueria and Taqueria Cancún made the list.

Yes, but: Somehow, El Farolito, known as the “most life changing burrito in America,” didn’t make the list.
Of note: Semilla, open Sundays-only as part of the Outer Sunset Farmers Market, has some of the best flour tortillas in the Bay Area, per the Chronicle.

“There’s not a single thing on the menu that you should skip.”
Between the lines: If you’re looking for a delicious breakfast burrito, check out Breakfast Little or El Taco Loco in the Mission District.

Megan’s thought bubble: I recently tried a super chicken burrito at Don Chuys Mexi-Mercado in the Excelsior and oohwee did it slap. Very juicy and very flavorful.

It happened. The section of the U.S. Treasury yield curve that most accurately predicts economic downturns has “inverted,” or gone negative, Matt writes.

And not for an intra-day blip — it’s stayed that way for a couple of days now.
Why it matters: This part of the yield curve — the difference between yields on 10-year Treasuries and 3-month bills — has accurately predicted every U.S. recession since 1955.

When it has gone below zero, a recession followed over the next two years.
Yes, but: Some thought its predictive streak would end when it last went negative in late 2019.

The economy was basically fine, until the COVID crisis hit, sending it into a sharp — but brief — collapse that preserved the curve’s perfect recession-calling record.
The bottom line: It’s just an indicator, not an infallible omen that dooms us. But still, it’s worth watching.

  9. PrP says:

In the NY Times today, the world’s population has hit 8 billion:

Until 1804, fewer than one billion people roamed our planet. More than a century later, in 1927, we crossed two billion.

Since then, the world population has shot up in the shape of a hockey stick, boosted by the triumphs of modern medicine and public health.

The latest marker was passed on Tuesday, when the United Nations said the world population had reached eight billion, just 11 years after it passed seven billion. (It is an inexact number, since there is no official count, but the international organization said its projections crossed the line on Tuesday.)

The growth rate, which is expected to slow globally over the coming decades, has been uneven around the world. Slowing growth rates in populous nations like China and the United States have caused some alarm, threatening to upend their societies. Rising birthrates in poorer nations threaten to strain systems that are already struggling.

The growing population has helped fuel consumption at what experts say is an unsustainable pace. It has contributed to environmental challenges, including climate change, deforestation and the loss of biodiversity, the United Nations said.

The market is actually up this month, but bearish bets are building fast, Matt writes.

The big picture: A measure of the sentiment from the options markets shows that bets on falling stock prices have sharply outpaced those expecting prices to rise.

This measure, known as the CBOE U.S. equity put/call ratio, has hit the highest — or most bearish — level on record in recent days.
How it works: The measure is a ratio of bets on falling prices, or “puts,” versus bets on rising prices, known as “calls.”

During the zaniest days of the meme stock boom in January 2021, the put/call ratio fell to some of the lowest levels on record.
Yes, but: This might sound like a reason to run away from stocks now. But oddly, market analysts usually see extreme levels of bearishness in investor sentiment as good news for stocks — a “contrarian indicator.”

That means when it hits extreme levels of either glee or gloom, stocks tend to then go in the opposite direction — as all the negative or positive sentiment is already priced into the market.
What we’re watching: The only thing that seems to matter for stocks right now is what the Fed does with interest rates.

Signs of slowing inflation — and expectations the Fed could slow rate hikes as a result — are what’s given the S&P 500 a lift lately.

  14. Robert says:

    18Nov22 =
FCC orders ISPs to show broadband ‘nutrition labels’ with all fees and limits:

Hidden fees and unexpected rate hikes have become an expected part of Americans’ internet, cable, and phone bills, but the FCC just passed a rule that may make this a lot less common. Broadband providers will now have to “prominently” display a “nutrition label” with all fees, catches, and caps clearly stated for any plan you’re considering.

“Our rules will require that broadband nutrition labels are fully displayed when a consumer is making a purchasing decision. That means consumers will have simple, easy-to-read facts about price, speed, data allowances, and other aspects of high-speed internet service up front,” said Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a statement accompanying the decision.

The labels look like the familiar food labels, and for good reason (beyond being “iconic”). With broadband providers, if you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile and then slow-roll it all the way to the Supreme Court if they think it’ll be more profitable that way.

So the labels must be completely standard, machine-readable, and displayed “on the main purchasing pages that providers have online. That means they cannot be buried in multiple clicks or reduced to a link or icon that a consumer might miss.” They also must be easily available on request after someone signs up.

On the label are all the vital statistics you need to know about your potential internet connection:

    Monthly price and contract length
Whether that price will change after a certain period and what it will change to
Complete list of monthly and one-time fees, and early termination fee
Whether the company participates in the Affordable Connectivity Program and link to check if one qualifies
“Typical” download and upload speeds, and latency
Data cap and price beyond that cap
Links to network management (e.g., zero rating and content blocking) and privacy policies
With all this posted clearly and in the same format between providers, anyone can look at two of these labels and, like comparing two brands of cereal, decide which one is right for them. Not because of flashy advertising or a misleading promo price, but because they can see the right numbers are higher or lower than the competition.

Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts?

I mowed me lawn today and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer.
The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking.

My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing. and I said, “Nothing.”

The reason I said “nothing” instead of saying just thinking” is because she then would have asked, ‘About what?” At that point, I would have had to explain that men are deep thinkers about various topics, which would lead to other questions.

Finally, I pondered an age-old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts?

Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts, but how could they know? Well, after another beer and some more heavy deductive thinking. I have come up with an answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby and even though I obviously couldn’t really know, here is the reason for my conclusion:

A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, it might be nice to have another child.”

But you never hear a guy say.

“You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts.’

I rest my case. Time for another beer. Then maybe a nap.

The case came up in court. The Judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself.

    The man replied…

“Well your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn’t help but notice her condition. She sat under a sweets sign that said, “The Double Mint Twins are Coming” and I grinned.

Then she moved and sat under a sign that said “Logan’s Liniment will reduce the swelling”, and I had to smile.

Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said “William’s Big Stick Did the Trick”, and I could hardly contain myself.

BUT, your Honor, when she moved for the fourth time and sat under the sign that said “Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident”..

The Power of a Determined Woman:

In the Northern Zhou Dynasty, a 14-year-old girl named DuGu QieLuo married her husband, a 17-year-old boy, Yang Jian. When married, her husband vowed that he would never have children with other women.

However, her husband later usurped the throne and established the Sui Dynasty, which was later called the Emperor Sui Wen. DuGu QieLuo also became the empress.

According to Rites of Zhou, a Chinese emperor should legally have one empress, three consorts, nine concubines, and 108 lower-rank concubines, totaling 121 women.

The Chinese think that the harem is a woman’s government. The vacancy of the concubines in the harem is just like the vacancy of the cabinet ministers, which will adversely affect the governance of the country. Therefore, marrying concubines is not only a right of the emperor, but also an obligation of the emperor.

At the same time, the nobles and ministers also hope to marry their sisters or daughters to the emperor in order to strengthen their political alliance with the emperor.

However, the empress didn’t think so, and she asked her husband to keep the vow before marriage and not to associate with other women.

Once, the emperor fell in love with a daughter of minister. After the empress knew that, while the emperor was dealing with government affairs, she sent someone to kill the emperor’s lover.

When the emperor heard about it, he was furious and fled the palace on his own horse. The ministers chased after the emperor on horseback and finally stopped the emperor in a valley of the deep mountain.

The emperor sighed, “Although I am the Son of Heaven, I have no freedom at all!”

The ministers persuaded the emperor: “How can your Majesty give up the world because of a woman!”

After listening to the persuasion of the ministers, the emperor wandered in the valley for a long time and finally returned to the palace at midnight.

In the end, Emperor Sui Wen had to obey his vow. There were five sons and five daughters in his life, all born to him and the empress. The Empress Dugu Qieluo is also famous in Chinese history for her strong jealousy.

SCAM TVS FOR BLACK FRIDAY SALES – 20NOV22

    “Black Friday Edition” TVs

As the popularity of Black Friday has risen to astronomical levels, retailers and manufacturers have had to go to more extreme lengths to compete. One way in which they do this is by manufacturing specific models for Black Friday.

This strategy can be used on a variety of products, but TVs are ripe for it, and it’s been going on for years. The idea is to produce a television that appears to be a certain model but is actually very slightly different. It will have a different model number, which is important (more on that later).

The differences are things that the average consumer probably won’t notice or care about. Examples include fewer HDMI ports, fewer local dimming zones, lower refresh rate, and sometimes the “trusted brand” on the TV isn’t even who manufactured the TV.

Since these TVs have their own unique model numbers, they don’t qualify for price-match guarantees. So even if the manufacturer hasn’t skimped on the specifications, you won’t be able to get it price-matched for a better deal anywhere else.

How to Spot a Black Friday Edition TV
With all this in mind, you might be wondering how to spot these TV imposters. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to do some digging to make sure you’re getting a legitimately good deal.

As mentioned, the model numbers are what identify these TVs, but you won’t get any information from just looking at the string of numbers. However, there are a few dead giveaways you can look for before you head to the store or click “Buy.”

First, are there any user reviews listed for the TV on the retailer’s website? No reviews can be an indication that the TV was only just recently added to the website for Black Friday.

To dig a little deeper, find the model number on the retailer’s website and do a web search for it. There are a couple of things we can look for. First, are there any reviews for the TV outside of the retailer’s website? If it seems like the TV doesn’t exist anywhere else on the internet, that can be a bad sign.

We can take it a step further by doing a more focused search. Do a web search for the model number and include “before:2022-09-30” in your search. This will show results from only before the month of November. If there’s no evidence of the TV existing before then, it was probably made specifically for Black Friday.
