This man, Brian Banks, was a high school football star. His life fell apart after he was accused of rape by a sixteen year old girl.
She later admitted that it was a lie. He had spent six years in prison at that point. This is him when he found out the case was dismissed.
At the time, he’d been offered a full scholarship to USC to play football. But at the time he got out, he was too out of form and unable to get back up to speed.
It is but one of many huge costs this man paid for this.
He was exonerated after his release, when he recorded a conversation with the woman who had accused him of the crime, where she admitted it never happened, but she was scared to go back on her claim for fear of losing the settlements money she’d received.
The woman was ordered to repay $2.6 million to the Unified School District (she’d sued the school for inadequate security).
Banks only received a measly sum of $150,000 for his time in prison.

The Crime & The Rush to Judgment
George was accused of killing two young white girls: 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker and 7-year-old Mary Emma Thames, whose bodies were found near George’s home in Alcolu, South Carolina.
Within hours of the discovery, George was arrested. He was interrogated without a lawyer or guardian present. There’s no official record of his confession—just the word of the officers who claimed he admitted to the crime.
The trial lasted just two hours.
The jury was all white.
It took them 10 minutes to sentence him to death.
George’s parents had been threatened with violence and were banned from the courtroom. Soon after, they were forced to leave town for their own safety.
George spent the next 81 days alone in a jail cell, 50 miles from home, awaiting his execution. He was never allowed to see his family.
The Execution
On June 16, 1944, George Stinney Jr. was led to the electric chair. He weighed just 95 pounds. His small frame made it difficult for the equipment to even fit him properly. Yet that didn’t stop the executioners.

He died holding onto a truth the world refused to hear: “I’m innocent.”

Key evidence had been ignored or suppressed.
The murder weapon—a 40-pound beam—would have been physically impossible for George to wield with lethal force.
There was no physical evidence linking him to the crime. No proper defense. No fairness.
It was a sham trial. A fabricated case, fueled by racism and fear.
From Injustice to Inspiration

Bass Reeves was born before the Civil War.
Reeves was born into slavery in July of 1838. William Steele Reeves owned him, and his family. He was forced to join the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War, but he eventually escaped and lived as a fugitive in Indian Territory among the Creeks and Seminoles.
After the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, Reeves relocated to Van Buren, Arkansas, where he bought land, worked as a farmer, and married Nellie Jennie. They started a family together, eventually having 11 children.
He was the first black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River.
According to Britannica, in 1875, Federal Judge Isaac Parker of the Western District of Arkansas commissioned Reeves to be a deputy U.S. marshal. Reeves was recruited to work in the Indian Territory due to his deep knowledge of the area and fluency in the Creek and Seminole languages, mainly responsible for apprehending wanted fugitives.

Reportedly, he was one of the most successful lawmen in Indian territory, serving over 30 years and bringing to justice 3000+ criminals! Of significant note, he tracked and captured Tom Story after 5 years.
Reeves was reportedly never injured, though he did have his belt and hat shot off on separate occasions!
Of most significant note, despite being born a slave, and growing up illiterate (which he remained his entire life), his life as a lawman was a remarkable and notable success. Nothing held him back. He adjusted to his illiteracy according to Black Past, by memorizing the warrants that were read to him by federal judges or court officials.
Reeves was known as a fair and honest agent of the law. Here are two concrete examples: (1) he arrested his church minister for selling illegal alcohol. (2) he even arrested his own son after engaging in a weeks-long manhunt to track him down. This was very difficult for him but his integrity required him to do the righ thing. (The son was tried and convicted but later given a full pardon.) According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Muskogee Police Chief Bud Ledbetter once said that he “never quailed in facing any man.”
His career as a marshal ended in 1907.
The state of Oklahoma took on policing duties over Indian Territory in 1907 which brought an end to Reeves’ career as a U.S. marshal. At 69, he became a policeman for the city of Muskogee. Eventually dying of nephritis at the age of 71, he left his mark on history as one of the greatest American frontiersman to have ever lived.
