Chemical found in Cheerios, Quaker Oats, other oat-based foods linked to potential health issues: Pesticide was found in 80% of people who were tested in the US

A pesticide linked to reproductive and developmental issues in animals was found in oat-based foods sold in the U.S., including under major brand names like Cheerios and Quaker Oats, according to a recent peer-reviewed study.

Chlormequat was detected in 80% of people tested in three geographical regions of the U.S. between 2017 and 2023, according to the study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.

Researchers also found that “the concentrations detected in 2023 samples were significantly higher than previous years’ samples.”

While some studies published in the National Library of Medicine linked the chemical to reproductive or development issues in animals, it raises “questions about whether it could also harm humans,” EWG researchers noted.

EWG is a nonprofit American activist group specializing in research and advocacy in areas such as agricultural subsidies, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants and corporate accountability.

In 2018, researchers noted that the Environmental Protection Agency published acceptable food tolerance levels for chlormequat chloride in imported oat, wheat, barley, as well as some animal products. In 2020, allowable levels were then increased for oats, the study said.

The use of chlormequat on food crops like wheat, oats and barley, decreases the stem height of the plants, making them less likely to bend over and easier to harvest, according to EWG.
In certain cases, the concentration was non-detectable while other products showed a “high prevalence of chlormequat in oats.”

In May 2023, EWG said it detected the chemical in 92% of oat-based foods, including Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
Quaker Oats, which is owned by PepsiCo, told FOX Business that the company stands “by the safety and quality” of its products.

“We have a comprehensive food safety management system in place. We adhere to all regulatory guidelines to ensure the safest, highest quality products for our consumers,” the company said in a statement.

General Mills, which owns the Cheerios brand, said that all of its products “adhere to all regulatory requirements.”

A deadly listeria outbreak tied to types of dairy products that infected people across nearly a dozen states prompted recalls from Costco, Walmart, Trader Joe’s and other major retailers.
Federal health officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with local health officials are investigating the multistate outbreak of infections that have been linked to queso fresco and cotija cheese made by Rizo-López Foods.
Cheese, cream and yogurt products have been impacted by nationwide recalls as a result.

What to know about the listeria outbreak
The CDC said infections with this particular outbreak strain have been reported since 2014.
The agency investigated outbreaks in 2017 and 2021. However, while “epidemiologic evidence in previous investigations identified queso fresco and other similar cheeses as a potential source of the outbreak,” health officials said there wasn’t enough information to identify a specific brand.

The CDC recently reopened the investigation after new illnesses were reported in December.

A sample of Rizo Bros Aged Cotija tested positive for listeria monocytogenes during a sampling conducted by the Hawaii State Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch in January 2024, the FDA said.

    Illnesses

As of Feb. 6, two dozen people have been infected across 11 states from June 15, 2014, to Dec. 10, 2023. Health officials warned that the number of illnesses “is likely higher than the number reported,” given that some people recover without medical care.

Of the people with information available, 23 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC. Two people have died, one from California and another from Texas.

Of the 22 people interviewed by health officials, about 73% of them reported eating queso fresco, cotija or similar cheeses.

    Recalls

A growing number of companies have issued recalls for products that include various types of cheeses, cream and yogurt such as blanco suave, cotija, Oaxaca, panel, queso creme, queso fresco, queso para freir, queso sec, requeson and ricotta.

The impacted products include salads and salad kits, tacos and taco kits, burritos, enchiladas, sandwiches, dressings, sauces and dips.

To date, the FDA has already posted 112 products sold by major retailers, including Costo, Walmart, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, that have been recalled.

    Symptoms to watch out for

Listeria symptoms typically occur within two weeks of eating the affected food. Mild symptoms include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the FDA.

If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, patients can get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Those who are pregnant, at least 65 years old, or have weak immune systems are most at risk of getting sick.

What should you do if you bought a recalled product?

Health officials said the recalled products should be thrown away or returned.

Consumers also need to clean any surface, such as refrigerators or containers, that may have touched the recalled products, the CDC said. Health officials warned that the bacteria can “survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.”

If a person comes down with any symptoms after eating the recalled products, they should call a health care provider “right away,” officials said.

While studying at Harvard Law School, Louis Brandeis took courses with an openly anti-Semitic professor. One day, Louis, carrying his lunch tray, sat beside the professor in the university dining room. Displaying his prejudice, the professor told Louis that a pig and a bird should not eat together. Louis, maintaining his composure, replied, “Don’t worry, professor. I’ll fly away,” and moved to another table.

In another incident, the professor continued his antagonism and asked Louis a question during a test. He asked, “If you found a bag of wisdom and a bag of money on the street, which one would you take?” Louis replied, “The one with the money, of course.” Attempting to stereotype Louis as greedy, the professor said he would have chosen wisdom. Louis cleverly responded, “Each one takes what he doesn’t have.”

Louis would graduate from Harvard Law in 1877 at the top of his class with a record GPA. That record would stand for about eight decades.

Louis was brilliant, witty, fearless, and these experiences foreshadowed the tenacity and resilience he would later bring to his legal career, where he would become known as “the people’s attorney” for his commitment to public causes, pro bono work for labor and workers’ rights, and efforts in defending and shaping laws for the benefit of working people. About this role, Louis would write,

“The public is often inadequately represented or wholly unrepresented. That presents a condition of great unfairness to the public. As a result, many bills pass in our legislatures which would not have become law if the public interest had been fairly represented…. Those of you who feel drawn to that profession may rest assured that you will find in it an opportunity for usefulness probably unequaled. There is a call upon the legal profession to do a great work for this country.”

After working for years in the private sector as an attorney, in 1916, Louis was nominated to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The debate over Louis’s appointment was so intense that it led to an unprecedented event: for the first time, the Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a public hearing on a nomination. This allowed individuals to testify before the committee, presenting arguments for and against confirming Louis. He was confirmed and became a Justice.

In his role, Louis was known for his skepticism towards unrestricted governmental power and monopolistic economic activities. He championed federalism, allowing state legislatures to address varying needs. And he stood for the importance of free speech, amongst other issues.

Louis retired from the Supreme Court in 1939 and passed away two years later in 1941.

The doctor, after an examination, sighed and said, ‘I’ve got some bad news. You have cancer, and you’d best put your affairs in order.’

The woman was shocked, but managed to compose herself and walk into the waiting room where her daughter had been waiting.

‘Well, daughter, we women celebrate when things are good, and we celebrate when things don’t go so well. In this case, things aren’t well. I have cancer. So, let’s head to the club and have a martini.’

After 3 or 4 martinis, the two were feeling a little less somber. There were some laughs and more martinis. They were eventually approached by some of the woman’s old friends, who were curious as to what the two were celebrating.

The woman told her friends they were drinking to her impending end, ‘I’ve been diagnosed with AIDS.’ The friends were aghast, gave the woman their condolences and beat a hasty retreat.

After the friends left, the woman’s daughter leaned over and whispered, ‘Momma, I thought you said you were dying of cancer, and you just told your friends you were dying of AIDS! Why did you do that??’

‘Because I don’t want any of those bitches sleeping with your father after I’m gone.’.

Bill’s wife follows him and asks, “Did you see anything that you liked under there?”

They decide that John should come to her house around 2 p.m. on Friday while Bill is at work.

On Friday, John arrives at 2 p.m.

      He pays Bill’s wife $100.

They go to the bedroom, have sex and then John leaves.

When Bill comes home at 6 p.m., he asks his wife, “Did John come by this afternoon?”

Reluctantly, she replies, “Yes, he did stop by for a few minutes.”

Next Bill asks, “Did he give you $100?”

She thinks, “Oh hell, he knows!” Finally she says, “Well, yes, he did give me $100.”

      “Good,” Bill says.

“John came by the office this morning and borrowed $100 from me. He said that he would stop by our house on his way home and pay me back.”

You have made them intelligent enough. Stop!

The military importance of Rafah for Hamas is real. On Oct. 7, Hamas invaded Israel, murdering, sexually assaulting and kidnapping civilians. Since the attack, Hamas’s leaders have refused to release dozens of Israeli hostages. With Israel having taken control of much of northern and central Gaza, at least some Hamas leaders and their weapons seem to be in tunnels under Rafah.

Two things, then, are simultaneously true: To defeat a violent enemy, Israel may need to invade Rafah. And an invasion of Rafah would almost certainly worsen the war’s awful civilian toll.

What does Israel hope to accomplish by invading? An invasion of Rafah could debilitate Hamas. Without control of Rafah, as Yonah Jeremy Bob, The Jerusalem Post’s senior military correspondent, has written, “Hamas would lose its last major remaining battalions, its last large city for hiding its leadership and human-shield hostages, and its only remaining way to rearm and smuggle in weapons from outside of Gaza.”

What might forestall an invasion? The most likely path for avoiding an invasion would involve an extended cease-fire in exchange for the release of about 130 hostages that Hamas is still holding in Gaza. “Either our hostages will be returned, or we will expand the fighting to Rafah,” said Benny Gantz, a centrist Israeli politician who joined the government after the Oct. 7 attacks.

There are certainly impediments to a deal. For one thing, Hamas’s leaders understand that the hostages give them leverage: Israel’s military might be even more aggressive if no hostages remained. For another, Netanyahu has often seemed more interested in destroying Hamas than winning the hostages’ release. Israel has also balked at releasing Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages.

How might the civilian toll be reduced if an invasion happens? How might Rafah’s civilians be protected? In many wars, civilians find safety in a neighboring country, but Egypt has largely refused to accept refugees. It is instead building a wall near Rafah.

Some military experts say that Israel has already taken steps to protect civilians, such as creating humanitarian corridors that allow civilian Gazans to flee battle zones — even though disguised Hamas militants might escape too. “Israel has adjusted almost everything in their approach to evacuate civilians,” John Spencer of the Modern War Institute at West Point said. Over the past two months, the daily death toll in Gaza has declined to about 150 (including both fighters and civilians), according to Gazan officials, down from more than 400 per day in October.

But 150 daily deaths is still a terrible toll, and many human rights experts say Israel could reduce it. In Rafah, that could involve several actions: less aerial bombing; the creation of both humanitarian corridors to leave Rafah and temporary safe zones within the city; and fewer restrictions on the humanitarian aid that Israel allows to enter.

    A little black history.

People tend to think of pirates as rather wicked fellows. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was known to be particularly fierce. What few people know is that the ships Blackbeard most often attacked weren’t regular ships… but slave ships.

In order to fit as much “human cargo” as possible, the slavers used ships that were larger and more slow to turn than other vessels. This made them an excellent target for Blackbeard and his crew. Upon seizing a slave ship, he would typically free the slaves, and give them an option to join him if they wished. Many did just this — as a result, a large number of Blackbeard’s crew members were of African descent by the time of his death. It made him somewhat of a hero and a legend to runaway slaves and their descendants.

As a result of his tendency to free a ton of slaves and disrupt the slave trade, Blackbeard became a problem for the authorities. Because a ton of free black slaves with guns and swords roaming the seven seas was a huge liability for the entire slave trade as an institution. Blackbeard had to go… in no small part because of his slave-freeing activities.

This will ultimately fail and WWIII will inevitably begin.
