J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb.” Dude’s story is like a rollercoaster, man. So, Oppenheimer was a big shot during World War II, leading the Manhattan Project and all that jazz. But after the war, things got dicey for him.
The Cold War was heating up, and the U.S. government was super paranoid about commies and spies. Oppenheimer had some left-leaning friends and had been involved in some progressive causes back in the day. That made him a target for suspicion. Plus, he started speaking out against the development of the hydrogen bomb, which didn’t sit well with the higher-ups.
So, what happened? The guy got his security clearance yanked in 1954 after a pretty humiliating hearing where they basically dragged his name through the mud. They questioned his loyalty, his friendships, and even his character. It was a full-on character assassination, man.
After that, Oppenheimer was kinda pushed to the sidelines. He still did some work in academia and got some awards later on, but his influence in government and military circles was toast.
