When a country becomes a battlefield and what it means for Ukrainian women * FRANCE 24 English

As war continues in Ukraine, in a special edition, we focus on its impact on women. With hundreds of thousands fleeing the conflict, it’s also putting women and girls at heightened risk of violence. We talk to those who stayed behind including one of the country’s first female combat soldiers as she prepares to defend Kyiv from Russia.

U.S., allies target Russian oil imports as millions leave Ukraine

Biden announced a Russian oil ban, a move likely to raise gas prices, while more than 2 million refugees have left Ukraine. Zelenskyy said he will stay in Kyiv.

President Biden is holding a press conference this morning regarding the Russian situation. I believe he may talk about the Russians threatening to continue to cut off gas supplies to Europe, the rising cost of oil, the hostages Russia is now taking, and the threat to NATO nations because PUTZin will surely lash out greatly in his frustration knowing his invasion isn’t going how he planned it. I would be very surprised if Biden says we will official enter the war today. The conference is running late so I will leave the link up. I’ve got to get to work.

“Rising Gas prices fuelling debate in Washington over war in Ukraine.” Hmm I was most worried about the loss of lives.

    • Linda says:

And it’s profiteering at its best not even an affect of the war. Way too early to create a real impact at the tanks.

      • James says:

Agreed, but the opportunity is too good to resist. Pockets will be filled at the expense of the middle class.

He still can’t say the world “Tesla.”

What side is the UN on?

“The language policy has fuelled concern that the organisation is going too far to avoid offending Russia, a powerful member state that holds one of the five permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

“Quite clearly this is not just any war, but an illegal war of aggression, that should be condemned from a height by all members of the UN and the UN itself,” said TD Neale Richmond, Fine Gael spokesman on European Affairs.”

    • Thomas says:

They are reenacting the stupidity of Neville Chamberlain when he attempted to appease Hitler by giving up countries who could not defend themselves against his aggression.

    • Connor says:

In the UN each country is on its own side. They use the collective body for leverage.

  5. Ç‹Î says:

You are a leader. Leaders give, not take. You will take what you have learned to your new destiny. Share the wisdom so their lives can be better. That is your destiny, the Universe’s next COMMANDER!

  6. Xena says:

I will never vote for a Republican again. Individually, some of them are pragmatic and practical, but as a group, they are horrible. And, almost none of them will try to stop the horros being perpetrated by the rest.

    • Mary says:

Pragmatic and practical Republicans dont exist. Any Republican still in the party is condoning Trump and his policies

  7. Suzette says:

The Robert’s court will go down as the most politicized in history. From the horrible decisions (Citizens united, voting rights) to the gross misconduct of Mitch that literally stole two appointments. SC decisions used to be made based on the constitution and precedent set by over 200 years of historical legal rulings. Now, these judges seem to first calculate which outcome best aligns with their personal beliefs. They then use/twist their legal arguments to meet their desired outcome.

    • Irene says:

The way the court operates now is that The legal theories are crafted by the Federalist Society, then a case is found to justify these dreamed-up justifications. The conservatives on the bench are all beholden to the FS because they were put there for the express purpose of voting for these theories. Some of them (Thomas in particular) even play a part in lobbying for these ideas and attend meeting and conventions of the FS. It’s legislating from the bench.

How is that not illegal? What can be done to fix this travesty of justice?!

“I think Putin is angry and frustrated right now. He’s likely to double down and try to grind down the Ukrainian military with no regard for civilian casualties,” CIA Director William Burns told lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee during the yearly worldwide threats hearing.
“But the challenge that he faces, and this is the biggest question that’s hung over our analysis of his planning for months now … is he has no sustainable political end game in the face of what is going to continue to be fierce resistance from Ukrainians.”

    Did You Know?

“String cheese” can be made from different types of cheese, but is typically made using low-moisture mozzarella cheese (in the U.S.) that has been heated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius)—that’s the temperature at which the milk proteins in the cheese align, making it possible to peel the “strings” off the main body of the cheese.

    • Helen says:

      Did You Know?

Coyote calls (howls and yipping) don’t just serve to let one pack know where another pack is, but as a form of birth control. If a pack rarely hears the howl of another pack on the wind, they’ll have more babies. If they hear frequent howls, they’ll have fewer babies since the resident population is fairly well balanced and resources may be more scarce in the region.

  10. Chloe says:

Can the UN intervene now? The perfect excuse is presenting itself.
Chernobyl represents a clear and present danger to a large portion of Europe populated by hundreds of millions of people. Fallout from another mistake would be continental if not global. An immediate ceasefire within 20 kilometers of Chernobyl with UN troops deployed to enforce the area would be the foothold the world needs to start the defense of Europe.

  11. Amy says:

Children only matter if they can be used to punish women for having sex, and keeping them in poverty for life as a result.

We already knew Republicans were inhumane and morally bankrupt. Now we just get to see them do it in real time, on a global level, with a situation that they will never be able to hand-wave.

Republicans support Putin and Russia, and have for years. They are enemies of America at this point.

  12. Stephen says:

Putin is bluffing but the west is afraid to call him on it. Meanwhile the courageous people of Ukraine die.

  13. Rafael says:

They blame profiteering on Biden, when in fact, the CEO’s of the oil industry are being compensated up to 10 times what they were compensated in prior years. Blame greed. That’s what it is. Republicans gotta blame someone who has nothing to do with it. We get 3% of our crude from Russia. Blame MSB, he flooded the market to drive his profits up, and reduce putin’s. This is why you don’t cut education to give tax breaks to the oil industry. Those idiots that support the republicans don’t understand markets.

Perhaps our government needs to look into profiteering. There are statues that address that. We have plenty of oil fields here. They cry about Keystone XL too, even though the tars sands go to refineries in the gulf, we don’t get that oil either. It goes right back to Canada. We do, however, get the bill for all of the leaks it had, so we paid for the cleanup. It also didn’t create many jobs here, just a few pipe fitters. The execs made the big bucks, and they pay taxes in Canada. I guess “truth” social isn’t fully operational yet.

  14. David says:

Putin’s failure in taking Ukraine has led him to go beyond normal military strategy and as an analyst just said, he will level all cities in Ukraine to meet his objectives which are to control the Ukrainians and install a subservient puppet government. He wants the Kremlin in charge of his satellite land mass, Ukraine. Expect the war to get worse not better because he won’t give up unless he’s no longer alive.

    Kazan
    Nizhny Novgorod
    Chelyabinsk
    Samara
    Omsk
    Rostov-On-Don

Pick a Russian city and allow us to show Putin what true devastation is.

  16. Jill says:

It appears Putin is trying to force the US (and NATO) into military engagement. I’d hate to be the people who have to make decisions about this. There is a huge risk with any step taken.

  17. Banner says:

Americans have been fed lies by past President, Republicans, and the Christian Right.
They do not realize the threat Russia poses to us. They think Europe does not affect us. They have been praising Putin for years and admonishing NATO.
They listen to the foreign born Murdoch’s Fox News which re-enforces the anti-Democracy Agenda.
Their racism, homophobia, misogyny, anti-diversity and hatred has been stirred up to control them.
Americans are becoming like sheep and think the Enemy is their fellow Americans.
My niece was telling her daughter to say Democrat is a dirty word. Maybe The United States deserves what is coming. I am tired of their mean, judging, racist, fear based Jesus. I left the Republican Party and Christianity.
I joined “Freedom From Religion Foundation”.
The United States could very well be destroyed like Ukraine but not from foreign Enemies but because the hate that Christianity and Republicans can stir up in their followers from within.

    • Jerry says:

The Soviet Union was a threat to us. Russia is not. Russia is currently involved in a regional war with a non-NATO member. Not our fight

      • James says:

If you know history, you see the future.
The situation is exactly the same as 1936 Europe.

  19. Thai says:

The European nations fears that they will be next are well-founded unless NATO takes far greater measures to stop putin RIGHT NOW.

    • Fabian says:

There won’t be a “next”, and if we stay on our course of delivering more weapons to Ukraine while economically and diplomatically isolating Russia, Putin and his band of criminals won’t even win this first war.

Germany is more dependent on Russian gas than any other nation in Europe (yeah I know, “told you so”), but I am more than willing to ban all Russian energy imports immediately and just take the hit to our oh so precious economy. Every day that goes by where my country finances Russian bombs on children’s hospitals is a day I struggle to look at myself in the mirror.

Freedom isn’t free, as you Americans might say, and there is a lot of truth to that.

As much as it pains me to say this, Russia has to bleed until the Russian people finally kick this lying murderer of a president out of the Kremlin together with his sycophants – and then we can talk again, not a second earlier.

  20. Joseph says:

Ukraine is the west’s 1930’s Ruhr Valley moment. Hitler was terrified if the French army ( Europe’s largest and strongest at the time) moved against him in his attempt to take the industrial Ruhr Valley, he would have scampered back into Germany proper at that time. With not moving, Hitler accessed the industrial might to construct his war machine and we all saw where that led. Time for the US and NATO to install a no fly zone. If Putin truly is intent on using nuclear weapons, he will do so at some stage. We might as well call his bluff one way or the other because if we don’t …..milllions will die in the future. Our call now…

    • James says:

Continued expressions of support from the west are nice, but ring hollow in light of the atrocities being committed in Ukraine.
Ukraine is a prologue of what’s to come; Putin is sending a message of what happens when a country doesn’t play ball with Russia. Our leaders are deluded if they think sanctions will stop Putin. It’s feel-good theater to convince ourselves we’re being strong and tough while actually doing nothing; they never hurt the people they are intended for.
If we know this, our politicians do too. I hope there is more going on behind the scenes than we’re being told. Like assembling a hit team to remove Putin.

      • Razio says:

That is not what is going to happen. The West knows the threat is real and they will do everything to prevent it. Sending kids off to war is one thing, but when it comes to a nuke in your backyard, those in power will think twice.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops insisted that their real target is the US, not Ukraine, after they opened fire on a Ukrainian man trying to flee his war-torn town, the traumatized resident told The Post.

“We’re not at war with Ukraine and Ukrainians, but at war with the USA inside Ukraine,” 55-year-old Igor Sitalo said Russian soldiers told him after they shot at him.

    • George says:

Yeah, but if those gutless Russians really want to fuck with us, they know where the US his.

Donnie Darko, a 2001 science fiction horror film, takes place over the course of 28 days and, coincidentally, took 28 days to film.

  23. Timonthy says:

Trump fired Flynn for lying to Pence. Then later he pardons him for lying to the FBI. This has got to be the craziest, most devious administration ever. Thank God there were enough real Americans in our military and at Justice to stand up to these traitors.
“If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.” — Dwight D. Eisenhower
Today, you have to choose. You can be an American, or you can be a Republican.

    I love someone.
She is the reason I want to wake up in the morning and embrace the day. If her face changed and it was unrecognizable to me, I would love her. If she could no longer speak, and I no longer had her voice to delight me, I would love her. And if I had only a memory of her, I would love her even more eternally.
